Hello friends.
I recently started reading Faust.
Now, of course, it was once a folklore and something you can vaguely know about if you have any German ancestry. Maybe something in the blood.
It was revisited by Goethe and published in 1808 and maybe since then it’s the defacto version one could refer too, but nevertheless it’s not necessarily my heritage; the German blood in America seems vastly different at this point, but maybe there’ll be a fifth Reich and that’d be interesting. I got funkopops instead.
The introduction covers the course of Goethe’s life, workings therein, and it’s hard to imagine working on a piece of writing for over 40 years. That there are multiple transcripts, and to replace the demons with Earth Spirits, that we could finally acknowledge the over-spectrum of it all.
If you ever had the pleasure of playing WarCraft 3 mods, there were some tower defense ones, and you could play the Sentinels, the ones with all the magus in arsenal, and if you looked at the map it was all pretty neon colours representing all the other teams or enemies. I wouldn’t mind submerging into the next mob wave to be destroyed, so I could at least look up close to a dignified people.
I think that’s in part the tension, and why anyone would want to grab at Mephisto’s contract – maybe with the backing of Hell we could finally see something higher than the asphalt and repeated plantings of suburban housing.
